When two 14 year students, Caleb Turon and Matthew Hewlett, were late for class, they gave their teacher a surprising letter from the Bank Of Montreal stating they were busy hacking their school’s ATM.
Caleb and Matthew found an instruction manual for their School’s ATM online. The manual included all the information they needed for the ATM, including administrative functions. During their lunch break, the student’s attempted to access the ATM using the default password provided in the manual. They succeeded into breaking into the ATM on their first try. They were able to print information such as transaction history, surcharge profits, and total cash in the unit.
The two students notified the head of security for the Bank of Montreal, who asked to see this hack in person. The students demonstrated this by playfully changing the ATM’s display settings to say “Go away. This ATM has been hacked.” Security stated that the security for the ATM will go under review.
